HEL have just completed a major element of our habitat management contract at Gartcosh Local Nature Reserve. This included the hand clearance of excessive aquatic vegetation from over 20 ponds which support Scotland's largest population of great crested newt. The maintenance of clear water within the ponds is essential to allow the protected amphibians to perform their courtship displays. Great crested newt will be emerging from hibernation soon to mate and breed in their ponds - the habitat management works were timed to be in advance of this annual event.
We also cut and cleared a number of meadows adjacent to the newt ponds. The maintenance of the grassland habitat will benefit a range of species within the Local Nature Reserve. We will be working with North Lanarkshire Council throughout the year on a number of habitat maintenance and improvement tasks.
